SAPS Arrests Two Suspects for Illegal Mining and Bribery

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Bojanala Sub-District 2 arrested two suspects, aged 33 and 26, during an operation targeting illegal mining at Tlhatlhaganyane (Ten Sisters) in Mabeskraal on Thursday evening, 7 May 2026.

Police recovered mining equipment including a yellow CAT excavator, a Case compressor, and a water pump. The 33-year-old suspect was arrested for illegal mining after he was allegedly found operating the excavator. According to police, the suspect stated he was an employee and contacted the alleged owner of the machinery.

The owner allegedly arranged for the 26-year-old suspect to approach police officers with cash in an attempt to secure the release of both the suspect and the confiscated machinery. The second suspect was arrested for bribery, and the money was seized as evidence.

Both suspects were detained at Mabeskraal SAPS. The first suspect faces a charge of illegal mining, and the second suspect faces a charge of bribery. They are expected to appear before the Mogwase Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 11 May 2026.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of North West, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, commended the officers for their professionalism and integrity. “The actions of our members demonstrate that SAPS remains committed to rooting out illegal mining and refusing any form of corruption. We will continue to intensify operations to ensure that those involved in criminal activities face the full might of the law,” said Naidoo.

Police investigations continue.
