CAPE TOWN, Western Cape — The South African Communist Party (SACP) campaign is gaining significant momentum in the Western Cape as the organization prepares to contest the 2026 Local Government Elections this November.
The party recently launched its official manifesto and unveiled its slate of ward candidates in Crossroads, located on the Cape Flats. According to party representatives, the core mission of this electoral push is to strengthen the political voice of working-class communities within local government structures. Key campaign pillars include tackling crime, addressing employment crises, and improving the delivery of basic municipal services.
On the critical issue of public safety, SACP spokespersons and ward candidates emphasized the need to guarantee secure living environments for all residents. They stressed that municipal law enforcement agencies must not operate in competition with the South African Police Service (SAPS). Instead, the party advocates for a collaborative, unified approach to combat crime effectively at the local level.
Highlighting the socio-economic challenges on the ground, SACP ward candidates pointed to a severe lack of local development as the root cause of rising “smash and grab” incidents and extortion. Candidates noted that while development previously existed in these communities, its current absence has created a vacuum, prompting a desperate cry from local youth who feel left behind.
Education and joblessness remain critical focal points for the campaign. Party representatives highlighted that many students finishing primary school are unable to secure placements in high schools within their own communities, forcing them to seek education outside their immediate areas. Furthermore, candidates drew urgent attention to the alarming 62% youth unemployment rate, pledging to make a tangible, measurable impact in reversing this trend through targeted local economic initiatives.
