Operation Prosper has continued its crackdown on illicit mining in the Lejweleputswa District, resulting in the arrest of two men on Friday, 22 May 2026.
A multi-disciplinary team comprising the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), and private security personnel conducted illicit mining and crime prevention operations in Allanridge.
While operating in Extension 3, police observed a group of individuals digging in the area. When the team approached, several suspects fled. Officers managed to apprehend two males, aged 25 and 40.
Authorities confiscated suspected Gold Bearing Material (GBM), spades, a pickaxe, and other equipment believed to be used in illegal mining operations.
The two suspects were arrested for possession of suspected Gold Bearing Material. They are scheduled to appear in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 25 May 2026.
