A 35-year-old nanny is scheduled to appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 September 2025, following her arrest in Empangeni for the alleged abduction of an infant.
The incident unfolded on the afternoon of Saturday, 27 September 2025, when the mother of a 9-month-old boy returned to her Durban home. She discovered that both her son and the nanny were missing. The mother immediately contacted the nanny, as she had not given any consent for her child to be taken out of the house.
During the call, the nanny confirmed she was in Empangeni but could not provide a reasonable explanation for her actions. Police reports indicate that subsequent communication suggested the mother would have to travel alone to Empangeni to retrieve her child.
The distressed mother reported the matter to the Durban Central Police Station. Law enforcement agencies responded promptly, with all relevant units joining the investigation.
The case saw a swift resolution in the early hours of Sunday, 28 September 2025. A police operation was conducted in Empangeni, leading to the arrest of the 35-year-old suspect. The 9-month-old child was found unharmed and was taken for a precautionary medical examination.
Further police investigations uncovered a motive for the abduction. It is alleged the suspect had told her boyfriend that the child was theirs. According to authorities, the boyfriend had subsequently been giving her R2500 monthly for the child’s upkeep.
The suspect remains in custody and will face charges in the Durban Magistrate’s Court.
