A group of Ventersdorp residents in the North West are calling for the shutdown of a local mining operation, alleging that it fails to benefit the community from which it extracts resources.
The residents have accused Newlyn Mining Solutions of systematically overlooking local people for jobs, choosing instead to employ individuals from outside the area. Frustrated by the lack of employment opportunities, the community has previously taken action, including staging a protest at the mine’s entrance and attempting to engage directly with the mine’s management over its recruitment of locals.
In response to the protests, Newlyn Mining Solutions secured a court interdict which now legally prevents the community from gathering near the mine’s premises.
Further complicating the dispute, some residents are alleging that a local councillor is interfering in the mine’s recruitment process. The community maintains that until local employment concerns are addressed, their demand for the mine’s closure will continue.
