Parts of the eastern Free State have been blanketed in snow as an intense cold front sweeps across the region. The Department of Cooperative Governance has activated a multi-stakeholder team to implement snow contingency plans, ensuring a coordinated response to the extreme weather conditions.
Residents Brace Against the Cold
A reported reported from Miqueleng Zone 8 in Ficksburg, where residents are scrambling to stock up on firewood and paraffin to keep warm. A steady stream of people could be seen pushing wheelbarrows filled with wood, with prices ranging from R50 for a small load to R600 for a full truckload.
“This is the only way people can warm themselves during this time of year,” he said. “The demand is high, and locals are doing everything they can to stay safe and avoid the dangers of the freezing temperatures.”
While snow has not yet fallen in Ficksburg itself, the region is experiencing extreme cold, with forecasts suggesting further wintry conditions. The Eastern Free State is known for its harsh winters, and authorities are on high alert to assist vulnerable communities.
Contingency Plans Activated
The Department of Cooperative Governance has mobilized disaster management teams to monitor the situation and provide support where needed. The snow contingency plan includes road safety measures, emergency shelters, and assistance for those without adequate heating.
“We are closely watching developments and ensuring that all necessary resources are in place,” a department spokesperson said.
As the cold front persists, residents are urged to take precautions, use heating sources safely, and stay updated on weather alerts.
