Tragedy Strikes Eastern Cape as Floods Claim One Life, Rescue Efforts Underway

One person has died, and three others were rescued by police divers in Coranlay, Mthatha, after being swept away by raging floodwaters. The victim, a woman, reportedly lost her grip on a tree after spotting a snake, leading to her tragic demise.

Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane provided an update on the ongoing crisis, confirming that severe weather has caused widespread flooding across the province. The disaster follows warnings from the South African Weather Service, with heavy rains affecting areas from Middledrift to Mthatha.

Rescue Efforts and Additional Incidents

Emergency teams, including police divers, health workers, and municipal rescue units, are working tirelessly to assist those stranded. A bus transporting children was also swept away near the R61 road, close to a school for the blind. While three children were rescued, authorities are still verifying the total number of passengers affected.

Premier Mabuyane expressed concern over residents building homes in flood-prone areas despite repeated warnings. “Municipalities have been urging people not to construct houses along flood lines, but today we are facing the consequences,” he said.

Road Closures and Infrastructure Concerns

Several major roads, including sections of the N6 and R61, remain closed due to flooding. The Mthatha Bridge is reportedly unstable, raising further safety concerns. Mabuyane highlighted long-standing infrastructure challenges, citing delays in road upgrades due to illegal settlements.

Appeal for Caution and Support

With more rain expected, the Premier urged residents to avoid flooded areas and cooperate with disaster teams. While provincial resources are currently managing the crisis, Mabuyane welcomed additional support from national and other provincial disaster units.

The South African Weather Service continues to monitor conditions, with authorities on high alert. As rescue operations persist, the Eastern Cape government has mobilized social services, health teams, and community safety officials to assist affected families.
