Cyril Ramaphosa to Attend G7 Summit in Canada, Set to Discuss South Africa’s G20 Preparations

President Cyril Ramaphosa will travel to Canada this weekend to attend the G7 Leaders’ Summit, where he is expected to update the group on South Africa’s readiness to host the G20 later this year.

The invitation marks a continuation of a tradition where South African leaders, though not members of the G7, are often invited to participate in discussions. The G7, originally formed as a group of industrialized nations, expanded to include Russia in 1997, becoming the G8 until Russia’s expulsion in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea.

Former South African presidents, including Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma, have previously attended G8 summits. President Ramaphosa first received an invitation to the G7 in 2018 and has been invited again this year in his capacity as the current chair of the G20.

Focus on Climate Commitments and G20 Agenda

During his engagement, Ramaphosa is expected to emphasize the need for G7 nations to fulfill their climate finance commitments under the Paris Agreement. “We’ve said to the G7 countries that they need to live up to the commitments they made in Paris,” Ramaphosa stated in previous discussions. He has advocated for the establishment of a fund to assist developing nations in transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

With South Africa set to host the G20 summit later this year, Ramaphosa will also brief G7 leaders—many of whom are also G20 members—on the country’s preparations. The overlap between the two forums presents an opportunity for alignment on key global economic and climate issues.

Potential Bilateral Meetings Under Discussion

While U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to attend the G7 summit, it remains unclear whether he will hold a separate meeting with Ramaphosa. Presidential officials indicated that bilateral meeting schedules are still being finalized.

“The meeting at the White House was quite recent and comprehensive,” a presidency spokesperson noted, referring to Ramaphosa’s previous engagement with Trump. “At this stage, the focus will be on engaging other G7 leaders to align discussions with South Africa’s G20 priorities.”

The G7 summit in Canada will serve as a critical platform for Ramaphosa to strengthen international partnerships ahead of South Africa’s G20 presidency, reinforcing the country’s role in shaping global economic and climate policy.
