Massive outbreak of cockroaches in South Africa ‘approaching pandemic levels’

According to CropLife South Africa, South Africa is experiencing a “near pandemic outbreak” of cockroaches, causing the insect to spread in large numbers in homes and businesses across the country.

Elriza Theron, marketing and communications manager for the pesticides group, recently wrote an essay claiming that South Africa’s extremely damp and sultry summer had unleashed a widespread contamination of German cockroaches in all neighbourhoods.

“Cockroaches are typically everywhere, but reports by the CropLife SA emergency number indicate a significant increase in German cockroaches throughout the country. Their population is fuelled by both the unsanitary conditions prevalent in South Africa and the country’s climate.”

Although the amazing creatures are mostly active at night, the infestation is so severe that many homes have insects scurrying around during the day, she said.

“Homeowners, the fast food industry, the retail sector and the hospitality industry must act swiftly to stem the tide of cockroaches in South Africa.”
