GAUTENG – Law enforcement spokespersons have confirmed the arrest of two Gauteng ATM bombing suspects following a targeted, intelligence-led raid in Lotus Gardens on Wednesday, 23 September 2026. The breakthrough marks a significant escalation in the police’s ongoing efforts to dismantle organized syndicates targeting financial infrastructure across the region.
The successful operation was executed by a formidable, multidisciplinary task force comprising Gauteng Crime Intelligence, Tactical and Special Operations, the Gauteng Highway Patrol, Pretoria West Detectives, and Vusela Covert. According to police spokespersons, the raid was triggered by actionable crime intelligence pointing to individuals heavily involved in a violent spree of ATM bombings, ATM safe pull-outs, drop-safe bombings, and business robberies spanning Gauteng and neighboring provinces.
Acting on this intelligence, the tactical team descended on a residential property in Lotus Gardens. Upon entering the premises, officers were approached by a woman who claimed to be alone. However, a thorough search of the residence revealed the first of the two 31-year-old suspects hiding underneath a bed. The investigation quickly expanded, leading authorities to a second property linked to the syndicate, where the second suspect was apprehended.
During the subsequent searches of the properties and a motor vehicle linked to the suspects, police uncovered a significant cache of illegal weaponry. Spokespersons for the joint task force detailed the recovery of a Z88 pistol and a semi-automatic rifle. In an apparent attempt to evade law enforcement tracking, both firearms had their serial numbers deliberately filed off. Additionally, a search of the suspects’ vehicle yielded rifle ammunition and multiple magazines.
Following the seizure, the two 31-year-old men were officially arrested and charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Police spokespersons confirmed that both suspects are scheduled to make their first appearance before the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 25 September 2026, where they will face the formal charges.
