LIMPOPO — A major illicit cigarettes seizure was successfully executed by local law enforcement on Monday evening following a dramatic vehicle pursuit. Acting on an intelligence tip-off, the Capricorn Highway Patrol and Sebayeng Police intercepted a suspicious Toyota Hilux transporting contraband tobacco, resulting in the recovery of an abandoned bakkie and thousands of rands worth of illegal goods.
Confirming the details of the operation, Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba stated that the incident unfolded on 24 August 2026, at approximately 19:00 [[4]]. Authorities had received actionable intelligence regarding a white Toyota Hilux moving illegal tobacco products through their policing jurisdiction and immediately operationalized the information.
Officers positively identified the targeted vehicle traveling along the R71 public road. When law enforcement attempted to pull the bakkie over, the driver blatantly ignored police instructions and sped away. A high-speed chase ensued, originating from Ga-Mothiba Village outside Mankweng and concluding when the vehicle was finally intercepted at Makotopong Village.
Upon being cornered, two unidentified male suspects abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, disappearing into the darkness to evade arrest.
Following the suspects’ escape, officers thoroughly searched the deserted vehicle. Colonel Ledwaba noted that the search uncovered a substantial haul of contraband tobacco with an estimated street value of R50,400. Both the illicit cigarettes and the abandoned Toyota Hilux—which carries an estimated market value of R110,000—have been officially seized and impounded as crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation.
