NORTHERN CAPE — A routine patrol evolved into a significant Kimberley drug bust this week after an alert police officer intercepted a vehicle suspected of transporting illicit narcotics. The successful intervention highlights the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) ongoing efforts to dismantle local supply chains and protect community safety from the ripple effects of substance abuse.
The incident unfolded on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, when a member of the Provincial Operational Response Services was conducting standard policing duties along Warren Street in the De Beers area. The officer noticed a vehicle containing two men acting suspiciously as it prepared to drive past.
Upon approaching the car and identifying himself, the officer secured the occupants’ permission to conduct a search. Inside the vehicle, law enforcement discovered concealed packets containing suspected cocaine and Khat, carrying an estimated street value of R1,500. A subsequent search of the vehicle’s interior uncovered a stash of cash, which authorities believe to be the direct proceeds of illegal drug sales.
Multiple Charges and Vehicle Impoundment
The operation resulted in the immediate arrest of a 41-year-old male suspect. Beyond facing charges for alleged drug dealing, the man was additionally charged with violating the Immigration Act. According to officials, the individual failed to provide valid identification or proper immigration documentation when requested by law enforcement.
Due to its alleged use in facilitating the criminal enterprise, the vehicle was seized on the spot by authorities.
Leadership Commends Proactive Policing
The Northern Cape Provincial Management has formally welcomed the arrest, noting that disrupting the proliferation and distribution of illicit drugs is vital, as narcotics actively fuel secondary criminality and pose a severe threat to public wellbeing.
Major General Gabathata Makgari, the District Commissioner of Frances Baard, publicly commended the arresting officer for his sharp instincts and vigilance.
“The proliferation of illicit drugs remains a serious concern, as the availability and distribution of drugs can contribute to substance abuse, violence and other forms of criminality within communities,” Major General Makgari said. “This arrest demonstrates the importance of vigilant policing and proactive interventions aimed at disrupting the drug supply chain.”

Northern Cape SAPS leadership emphasized that the department remains resolute in its commitment to fighting drug trafficking. Moving forward, police operations, intelligence-driven investigations, and targeted interventions will be further intensified. The 41-year-old suspect is expected to make an upcoming appearance at the Kimberley Magistrates’ Court to face the pending charges.
