KWAZULU-NATAL — A severe cold front sweeping across the region has triggered a chaotic sequence of seven vehicle crashes on KZN’s North Coast roads, culminating in a dramatic R34 dam rescue where emergency crews saved a family from near-freezing waters.
Between 15h00 and 20h00 yesterday, Vryheid and Newcastle-based KZPA medical teams were pushed to their limits during a grueling five-hour window. The severe weather system brought a dangerous mix of rain, snow, and icy road surfaces, resulting in injuries to eleven people across the affected areas. The collisions were heavily concentrated on the R34 corridor between Bloedriver and the N11, within Vryheid town, and along the N11 at Ingogo.
The most critical emergency unfolded at Bloedriver Poort. A family’s vehicle lost control on the slick roadway, plunged off the edge, and landed in a nearby dam. Advanced paramedics deployed specialized water rescue techniques in freezing conditions to extract all four occupants safely.
According to a KZPA Spokesperson, the victims were treated on-site for shock and hypothermia following prolonged exposure to the cold water. The mother suffered serious injuries, including suspected fractures, while the father and their two children—an estimated 10-year-old girl and a 14-year-old boy—sustained minor injuries.
The hazardous conditions spawned several other serious accidents in rapid succession. In the same dangerous stretch of the R34, a second vehicle overturned, leaving three occupants with minor injuries.
Meanwhile, in Vryheid, a bakkie veered off Kerk Street and collided violently with a tree. That crash left two patients in serious condition with suspected chest trauma and fractures. Further south on the N11 at Ingogo, a two-vehicle collision added three more patients to the casualty list, all suffering minor injuries.
All injured individuals were stabilized at the various scenes by KZPA’s emergency personnel before being transported to area hospitals for comprehensive medical care.
Following the intense afternoon and evening of emergencies, the KZPA Spokesperson issued a strong warning to the public. Motorists are being urged to exercise extreme caution and adjust their driving to the conditions as the cold front persists, with rain, snow, and icy road surfaces continuing to threaten commuters across the province.
