Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison for Murder of Stepson in Northern Cape

The Pixley Ka Seme District Police Management in the Northern Cape has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of 45-year-old Jan Afrika for the murder of his 24-year-old stepson, Wiseman Henry Louw. The successful prosecution follows an investigation conducted by Kuyasa detectives.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 17 July 2025, in Operation Vula, Kuyasa. According to police reports, Afrika, the deceased, and the deceased’s mother were socializing at their residence earlier in the day. The accused’s wife subsequently left to visit her daughter, while the deceased went to a tavern.

Between 22:00 and 23:00, the wife returned home, but Afrika refused her entry into the shack. She retrieved the deceased to intervene so that she could gain access to the residence and retire for the night. Upon their arrival, the accused again refused to open the door, prompting the deceased to force it open. An argument ensued between the two men, during which Afrika stabbed the deceased once in the chest with an Okapi knife.

The victim was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. Following the stabbing, Afrika surrendered himself at the Kuyasa Police Station. He was arrested and charged with murder, and was later released on bail pending his trial.

On Monday, 08 June 2026, Afrika appeared in the Colesberg Regional Court, where he pleaded guilty to the murder charge. He was sentenced to 12 years of direct imprisonment. The court additionally declared him unfit to possess a firearm.
