VREDE — The Harrismith Public Order Police Unit has arrested seven suspects following the looting of more than 15 tuckshops owned by foreign nationals in Thembalihle Township, near Vrede, on the night of Wednesday, 17 June 2026.
The unrest began at approximately 19:30 when a 16-year-old boy from Extension 3 purchased snacks from a local tuckshop and subsequently reported suffering from stomach cramps. After the boy informed community members of his condition, they confronted the tuckshop owner. When the owner allegedly refused to open the premises, community members forced entry and looted groceries from the store.
The incident escalated as additional community members joined the crowd, leading to the looting of multiple other tuckshops in the area. During the unrest, private security personnel who were assisting the police in calming the situation were attacked. Additionally, two state police vehicles were damaged, sustaining deflated tyres and broken windscreens.
The Harrismith Public Order Police Unit responded to the scene, arresting seven suspects and recovering a portion of the stolen goods. The situation was brought under control and remained calm until approximately 04:00 on Thursday morning.
The Public Order Police Unit, in conjunction with the Vrede SAPS, continues to monitor the area. The seven arrested suspects are currently being processed and are expected to appear before the Vrede Magistrate’s Court shortly.
