BLOEMFONTEIN – Authorities have successfully intercepted a massive infrastructure theft operation in the Free State, resulting in the arrest of a truck driver transporting millions of rands worth of stolen copper cables and other essential infrastructure components. The SAPS Tactical Response Team (TRT) apprehended the suspect after tracking a vehicle suspected of moving illicit goods toward Gauteng.
The operation commenced on Friday, 12 June 2026, when Parkweg TRT operators received an intelligence tip-off regarding a white Volvo FH horse-and-trailer truck. The vehicle was intercepted near a filling station within the Glen Police Station precinct. During a subsequent search, officers noticed copper cables protruding from torn bags inside the trailer. The 47-year-old male driver was immediately detained and escorted under police guard back to the Parkweg Police Station grounds.
To accurately catalog the seized cargo, specialists from Eskom, Telkom, and Centlec (SOC) Ltd were deployed. Because of the sheer volume of the recovered goods, the inspection was relocated to the Bainsvlei Police Station grounds on Saturday, 13 June 2026, where there was adequate space to fully unload the truck. A Centlec Engineering Wires Section supervisor confirmed the cargo included 35mm copper cable, Air-dac, and HT cable insulation. In total, law enforcement confiscated nine large bags of these materials.
The financial implications of the bust are significant. Centlec identified 5,760 kilograms of their stolen property, assigning an estimated replacement value of R3 million. Additionally, Telkom recovered 40 kilograms of their telecommunications cables, valued at an estimated R4,500.
Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Thabang Solomon Lesia noted that these specific components are critical for supplying electricity to both industrial hubs and residential neighborhoods, including street lighting networks. Addressing the broader impact of the crime, Lt Gen Lesia emphasized that the destruction and theft of critical networks directly deprive law-abiding citizens of their livelihoods. He highlighted the necessity for a collaborative approach involving the general public and private stakeholders to halt these crimes, urging the community to adopt an “if you see something, say something” mentality. The Commissioner also praised the Parkweg TRT members for their rapid and effective response to the initial tip-off.
Following the seizure, a case involving the possession of suspected stolen essential infrastructure and violations of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18/2015 was registered at the Glen Police Station. The 47-year-old suspect remains in police custody and is scheduled to make his first appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court on Monday, 15 June 2026.
