The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has issued a stark warning to motorists to enhance vehicle visibility and exercise heightened caution when driving during late-night and early-morning hours, following a series of devastating road crashes that claimed 24 lives across four South African provinces over the past week.
In a statement released Monday, the RTMC emphasized the critical importance of sober driving and adaptive navigation to prevailing road conditions. “The corporation calls on motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and to take road conditions into account when travelling,” the agency stated.

Gauteng: Five Dead in Kagiso Collision
On Sunday at approximately 3:00 a.m., a bakkie rear-ended a hatchback on Old Randfontein Road in Kagiso, near Mogale City. All five occupants of the hatchback died at the scene. The driver of the bakkie sustained no injuries.
North West: Nine Fatalities in Minibus-Truck Crash
Late Thursday, just before midnight, a minibus towing a trailer and carrying 13 passengers collided with a truck at the intersection of the R500 and R42 in Buffelshoek. Six men, one woman, and one girl died instantly; a ninth victim succumbed to injuries in hospital shortly afterward.
Limpopo: Head-On Collision Claims Five Lives
On Friday, a fatal head-on collision occurred on the N1 near Nyl Plaza. A minibus allegedly crossed the median into the path of an oncoming truck, resulting in five deaths.
Free State: Minibus and Bakkie Crash Leaves Five Dead
Another head-on collision took place Sunday on the N1 between Kroonstad and Heuningspruit, involving a minibus and a Ford Ranger. Four minibus occupants, trapped inside the vehicle, were burned beyond recognition. A fifth victim, an occupant of the bakkie, later died in hospital from sustained injuries.
The RTMC confirmed that investigations into the precise causes of all incidents remain ongoing. Preliminary findings suggest factors such as driver fatigue, poor visibility, speeding, and possible impairment may have contributed to the tragedies.
Road safety experts reiterated key precautions for night-time travel:
- Ensure all vehicle lights, reflectors, and windows are clean and fully functional
- Reduce speed and increase following distance in low-visibility conditions
- Avoid overtaking on undivided roads after dark
- Take regular breaks to combat driver fatigue on long journeys
