The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued urgent warnings for cold, wet, and windy conditions expected to impact the central and southern parts of the country from Wednesday, with localized flooding possible across the Eastern and Western Cape provinces.
A deepening cut-off low-pressure system, developing west of South Africa, is forecast to propagate eastward across the nation beginning Wednesday before exiting over the weekend. Coupled with a cold front tracking south of the coastline, the system is expected to deliver widespread rainfall, strong winds, and a sharp temperature drop.
Forecast Breakdown
Tuesday: Fine conditions are anticipated across the eastern interior. Elsewhere, skies will be partly cloudy and cool to cold, with isolated to scattered showers along the Western Cape coast, adjacent interior, and western parts of the Eastern Cape.
Wednesday–Thursday: Cloudy, cold, and unsettled conditions will dominate. Showers and thundershowers, initially scattered, are expected to become widespread over southern regions. Rainfall may intensify along the south coast and adjacent interior, raising the risk of heavy downpours and flash flooding. Snowfall is possible over the higher elevations of the Eastern Cape.
Official SAWS Statement
“A cold front is expected to slip south of the country, with a cut-off low deepening west of the country, which is expected to propagate eastwards across South Africa from Wednesday and finally exit the country towards the weekend,” SAWS confirmed on Monday.
Active Weather Warnings
SAWS has activated the following alerts for Wednesday and Thursday:
⚠️ Disruptive Rainfall: Heavy rain may endanger lives, flood roads and bridges, swell rivers rapidly, and force closures of major routes. High-risk zones include:
– Eastern Garden Route District (Western Cape)
– Coastal and interior areas between Plettenberg Bay and East London (Eastern Cape)
⚠️ Localized Flooding: Settlements, low-lying areas, roadways, and bridges in parts of the eastern Western Cape and southern Eastern Cape remain vulnerable to sudden inundation.
⚠️ Hazardous Marine Conditions: Damaging winds and elevated wave heights may disrupt operations at small harbors and complicate navigation for small vessels and personal watercraft between Cape Point and Plettenberg Bay.
⚠️ Extreme Conditions: Very cold, wet, and windy weather is forecast for the central and eastern interior of the Western Cape, southern Namakwa District (Northern Cape), and parts of the Eastern Cape.
