PUTCO Implements 10% Fuel-Linked Fare Increase Amid Rising Operational Costs

Johannesburg, Gauteng – Major bus operator PUTCO has implemented a 10% fare increase effective immediately, citing unsustainable pressure from rising diesel prices and operational costs.

PUTCO spokesperson Lindokuhle Xulu confirmed the adjustment, clarifying that the increase is specifically fuel-related and separate from the company’s usual annual January fare review. Xulu stated that continuing to provide services without implementing the increase would not be sustainable, adding that engagement with government to secure relief for passengers has not yet yielded results.

“We have been trying to remain calm and look at the situation,” Xulu said. “But unfortunately, after two months of absorbing costs, we are not going to be able to sustain the service we provide without implementing this fare increase.”

Xulu noted that while a 35% increase would be required to fully offset current fuel expenses, PUTCO opted for a phased 10% adjustment to accommodate passengers who rely on the subsidized service. The company operates primarily for commuters who cannot afford alternative modes of transport.

The fare adjustment comes as Johannesburg Metro reportedly scales back trips on select routes due to similar operational and financial constraints. Affected PUTCO routes include Mayfield Park, Randpark Ridge, and Dainfern, with further details to be communicated to commuters. The company emphasized that morning peak trips serving work and school commuters remain prioritized, while mid-morning and early afternoon services face reductions.

Looking ahead, fuel price forecasts remain uncertain, with some projections suggesting potential diesel price decreases while others anticipate further increases by June. Xulu indicated that PUTCO cannot predict future fare movements but will respond to changing conditions. He also cautioned that even if fuel prices decline, a ripple effect from costs already absorbed may prevent immediate fare reductions.

PUTCO has been engaging with the Department of Roads and Transport, as well as SANTACO, the public transport industry body, to explore possible interventions that could shield passengers from further cost increases. “Those conversations, though ongoing, have not yielded any results in terms of the relief we were looking for,” Xulu said.

The taxi industry is reportedly facing comparable pressures, meaning commuters across multiple transport modes may need to prepare for continued budget adjustments in the coming months.
