Kanana police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder after a shooting incident was reported on Saturday night, 30 May 2026, at a local tavern in Kanana.
Upon responding to the scene, officers discovered four individuals with gunshot wounds lying near the entrance and outside the establishment. Preliminary investigations indicate that three unidentified male suspects, armed with rifles and wearing face coverings, carried out the attack.
During the incident, a 15-year-old female sustained fatal gunshot wounds and collapsed near the tavern entrance. As the shooting continued, patrons scattered in various directions in an attempt to escape.
The three additional deceased victims have been identified as male nationals of Lesotho, aged between 30 and 36. Two other Lesotho women, aged 30 and 45 respectively, sustained non-fatal gunshot wounds and were admitted to hospital for medical treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and no arrests have been made at this stage.
North West Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General (Dr) Ryno Naidoo, condemned the incident and urged communities to work closely with the police by providing any information that could assist with the investigation.
Police continue to appeal for witnesses or anyone with information regarding the suspects or the events leading up to the shooting to come forward.
