Olievenhoutbosch Police Intercept Vehicle, Seize Illegal Firearms and Apprehend Driver

A coordinated patrol operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Olievenhoutbosch led to the arrest of a 38-year-old man and the recovery of two unlicensed firearms, live ammunition, and a motor vehicle suspected to be stolen.

The operation unfolded on Friday, 29 May 2026, at approximately 09:30, when SAPS members conducting routine crime prevention patrols along the Samrand and R55 roads identified a Toyota Hilux exhibiting suspicious behaviour. Officers initiated a lawful traffic stop for inspection.

As the vehicle came to a halt, multiple occupants seated in the rear compartment exited and fled the scene on foot. Officers secured the area and conducted a tactical search of the vehicle, during which they discovered two 9mm pistols and seven rounds of live ammunition. The driver, a 38-year-old male, could not produce valid licences for either firearm.

Further on-scene investigation revealed that the Toyota Hilux was equipped with fraudulent registration plates. The vehicle was subsequently impounded to facilitate forensic verification and further investigative procedures.

The driver was taken into custody and formally charged with:
– Possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition; and
– Possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.

The seized firearms have been submitted for ballistic analysis to determine whether they were involved in other criminal incidents and to assess potential connections to open case dockets.

Major General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, praised the responding officers for their diligence and proactive approach, noting that their swift action prevented potentially dangerous weapons from remaining in circulation and directly supported community safety objectives.

SAPS confirms that investigative efforts continue. Detectives are actively pursuing leads to identify and apprehend the individuals who fled the vehicle during the interception.
