R179.6 Million Approved for Spaza Shop Support Fund Amid Registration Push

The Department of Small Business Development has confirmed that R179.6 million has been approved from the R500 million Spaza Shop Support Fund, though officials urge more South African-owned spaza shop operators to formalize their businesses to access the available support.

The fund, a joint initiative between the Department of Small Business Development and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, has received 4,522 applications nationally. Of these, 2,369 businesses have been approved for funding across all nine provinces. Disbursement is being managed through two implementing agencies: the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency and the National Empowerment Fund.

Department representatives stated that approved support covers stock purchases, point-of-sale devices, infrastructure upgrades, inventory assistance, business improvements, and non-financial business development services. These resources are designed to improve sustainability and competitiveness within township and rural retail sectors.

Demographic data indicates the fund is advancing transformation objectives: 43% of approved enterprises are women-owned, 18% are youth-owned, and 2% are owned by persons with disabilities. “This demonstrates the fund’s contribution towards broadening economic participation and supporting greater inclusion within township and rural economies,” a department spokesperson said.

However, only 58% of applicants received approval, primarily because they had secured the required municipal trading licenses or permits. Officials emphasized that declaring a spaza shop business to a municipality is only the first step; owners must complete local regulatory processes to obtain formal trading documentation to qualify for funding.

“We are busy distributing and dispersing stock to those applicants and we want to see more applications coming through so that we’re able to utilize the entire fund,” a fund manager noted. “It is our interest that only South African-owned spaza shops receive funding, and we ensure through rigorous checks that the money only goes to South African-owned enterprises.”

To increase awareness and uptake, the Department of Small Business Development and its partners will launch a nationwide campaign next month to educate spaza shop owners about qualification requirements. Officials believe that supporting these small businesses will help create jobs and strengthen the economic fortunes of township and rural communities.
