KAYAMANDI, Stellenbosch – At least 10 homes have been washed away in Kayamandi following heavy weekend rains that triggered flash flooding, with the Enkanini informal settlement among the hardest-hit areas.
Residents are still counting their losses days later, even as the sun returned on Wednesday. Washed-away roads have left access routes completely cut off.
“Homes were gone in a matter of hours,” one resident said, describing the destruction. “The flash floods tore through here. It was as if we were at the sea. The rain fell with such force. You could hear the sound of it coming. The water destroyed the walls, it swept away everything.”
A Local councillor outlined the winter plan for people in the northern areas and said rough operations are ongoing to address the crisis.
