Police Nab Woman with Explosives During Routine Stop

A routine patrol by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Atteridgeville led to the arrest of a female suspect found in possession of explosives on Saturday morning, 29 November 2025.

The incident occurred at approximately 09:00 when officers, conducting crime-prevention duties along the R511 road, identified a suspicious Mercedes-Benz Sprinter travelling in the direction of Hartbeespoortdam. The vehicle was promptly brought to a stop.

According to police, the members tactically approached the vehicle and requested the occupants to step out along with their luggage for a standard inspection.

During the subsequent search, officers uncovered several explosives and explosive components inside a bag belonging to one of the female passengers. The suspect was unable to provide a valid reason for possessing the hazardous materials and was immediately placed under arrest.

The SAPS Bomb Disposal Unit was contacted, attended the scene, and safely secured the explosives for removal and safe keeping.

A case docket has been officially opened, and police have confirmed that investigations are underway to determine the origin and intended destination of the explosives. The suspect has been formally charged with the illegal possession of explosives.
