ANC Reaffirms Commitment to Failing BEE, Seeks to Strengthen US Ties

The African National Congress (ANC) has reiterated its commitment to Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE), despite criticism that the policy discourages investment and hampers economic growth. Speaking at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, the ANC’s Economic Transformation Sub-Committee acknowledged the need to review B-BBEE’s implementation but ruled out abandoning it entirely.

“We accept that there is a case for rethinking how it will be implemented in the future, but we are not about to abandon it,” a representative stated. The party recognized that adjustments may be necessary, including a “substantial revisit” of how the policy is enforced.

Meanwhile, the ANC addressed strained diplomatic relations with the United States, citing concerns over US tariffs affecting South African jobs. The government has reportedly presented a framework to US authorities aimed at fostering a mutually beneficial relationship. “Channels remain open to ensure we can find common ground,” officials noted.

Additionally, the NEC emphasized job creation, particularly for youth, through expanded public employment programs, the Presidential Employment Stimulus, and private-sector incentives. The ANC is expected to announce its conclusions on the functionality of the Government of National Unity on Sunday.
