Kings Beach Closed Due to Sewage Spill, Raising Health and Tourism Concerns

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has temporarily closed Kings Beach in Humewood after a sewage spill contaminated the water, elevating E.coli levels to unsafe heights. The popular Blue Flag beach, a key recreational and tourist destination, now sits empty as authorities work to address the pollution.

Beachgoers and Locals Express Frustration

The closure has disrupted regular activities, including the weekly Park Run, which attracts around 400 participants. Derek Hayward, a resident and frequent runner, expressed disappointment over the cancellation.

“It’s disappointing. Approximately 400 people run and walk the Park Run every Saturday, but unfortunately, it’s been cancelled due to a sewage spill,” Hayward said.

Locals have also raised concerns over the lack of signage warning beachgoers of the contamination. Some visitors, unaware of the spill, entered the water before learning of the risks.

“We came for our regular training and decided to take a swim. We had no idea there was something wrong because there are no signs anywhere,” one resident said.

Political Blame and Infrastructure Failures

The Democratic Alliance (DA), the opposition party in the metro, has blamed poor governance for the deteriorating infrastructure. The city currently has five vacant critical posts and a municipal manager who has been suspended for 20 months.

“Nelson Mandela Bay is one of the few metros with the finances to invest in infrastructure, yet in the last two years, nearly a billion rand meant for upgrades was forfeited due to an inability to spend it,” a DA representative said.

Municipality Responds, Promises Repairs

The municipality attributed the spill to heavy rainfall overwhelming sewer systems but stated that repairs are underway. A damaged line is being fast-tracked for completion within two weeks, and an additional bypass pump has been ordered to prevent future overflows.

Water quality testing is ongoing, and updates will be provided as work progresses. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the beach until it is declared safe.

Tourism Fears Loom

With Kings Beach being a major attraction, there are growing concerns about the spill’s impact on tourism, especially during peak season. The municipality faces pressure to resolve the issue swiftly to restore confidence among visitors and residents alike.

For now, the iconic beach remains closed, leaving locals and tourists waiting for cleaner waters and clearer communication from city officials.
