Justice Mlambo Appointed as South Africa’s New Deputy Chief Justice

In a significant judicial appointment, President Cyril Ramaphosa has named Justice Dunstan Mlambo as South Africa’s new Deputy Chief Justice, effective today, 1 August 2024. The announcement was made late last night in a statement from the Presidency.

Justice Mlambo, who has served as Judge President of the Gauteng Division of the High Court since November 2012, was selected following a consultative process involving the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and political parties in the National Assembly.

The Presidency confirmed that President Ramaphosa acted in accordance with Section 174(3) of the Constitution in making the appointment. The President also formally notified Chief Justice Raymond Zondo of the decision.

In his statement, Ramaphosa commended the JSC for its “transparent, inclusive, and robust” selection process, which he said reflected the commission’s dedication to upholding constitutional values. He also expressed gratitude to Justice Mlambo for accepting the critical role, stating that his leadership would be vital in “strengthening the rule of law, enriching jurisprudence, and asserting the rights of all South Africans.”

The appointment comes as Acting Deputy Chief Justice Mandisa Maya concludes her tenure on the bench after 17 years of service, with her term officially ending yesterday.

Justice Mlambo, a respected figure in South Africa’s judiciary, is expected to bring extensive experience to the Constitutional Court as the country’s second-highest judicial officer. Legal experts have welcomed the appointment, citing his track record of fairness and commitment to constitutional principles.

The judiciary now awaits further details on the transition as Justice Mlambo assumes his new responsibilities.
