EASTERN CAPE — Following a violent Dutywa bus attack that left a privately-owned vehicle engulfed in flames, a swift multi-agency law enforcement operation has resulted in the arrest of five suspects. The coordinated response not only secured the primary crime scene but also successfully intercepted and rescued a second targeted vehicle before it could be harmed.
The initial incident unfolded on the morning of Tuesday, 29 September 2026, at approximately 07:15. Authorities were dispatched to the Chachazela location in Chisela A/A, just outside Dutywa, following reports of a coordinated ambush along Colosa Road. According to preliminary investigations, a group of suspects traveling in several bakkies intercepted a privately-owned bus. The attackers allegedly pelted the vehicle with stones, robbed the occupants of their personal belongings and cash, and subsequently set the bus alight. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, the bus was fully engulfed in flames with no occupants inside. The driver and one passenger sustained minor injuries during the ordeal, while the remaining passengers managed to escape unscathed.
Demonstrating high situational awareness, the responding officers and allied law enforcement agencies remained on high alert while processing the first scene. They soon received a second distress call reporting another bus being actively chased by individuals in bakkies in the immediate vicinity. The rapid deployment of the tactical team allowed them to locate and rescue the second bus, preventing any damage or casualties in what appears to be a coordinated wave of transit-related crime.
Investigators quickly linked five men, aged between 25 and 56, to the first crime scene. The suspects were apprehended and are now facing severe legal consequences. They are scheduled to appear at the Dutywa magistrate’s court on Wednesday, 30 September 2026. The charges against them are substantial, including malicious damage to property, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
The successful resolution of the incident has been attributed to the seamless cooperation between various security clusters. Acting Amathole District Commissioner, Brigadier Zinikele Freddie, commended the swift, multi-agency collaboration that led to the arrests. Highlighting the importance of community and police partnerships in curbing such violent transit crimes, Brigadier Freddie stated, “Fighting crime is a collective responsibility,” emphasizing that ongoing vigilance remains crucial for the safety of commuters in the region.
