50-Year-Old Man Sentenced to 25 Years in Prison for Child Rape in Jan Kempdorp

NORTHERN CAPE – A 50-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years in direct imprisonment by the Kimberley Regional Court for the rape of a five-year-old girl in Jan Kempdorp. The conviction concludes a thorough investigation by the Hartswater Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit, which ensured the perpetrator faced full legal consequences.

The incident occurred on 21 October 2023 at a residential property in Jan Kempdorp. The victim was at home with her mother and her mother’s friend when the accused, who was a tenant at the residence, invited the child to his room under the pretext of fetching chips. The mother, familiar with and trusting of the tenant, permitted the child to accompany him.

Once inside the rented room, the accused assaulted the child. The victim’s mother subsequently entered the room and discovered the assault in progress. Law enforcement was immediately notified, and a formal rape case was registered at the Jan Kempdorp Police Station.

Detective Warrant Officer Sidwell Dastile of the Hartswater FCS Unit was assigned to the case. His diligent investigative work formed the foundation of the successful prosecution. Following his arrest, the accused appeared in court, where he was found guilty of the charges.

In addition to the 25-year prison sentence, the court ordered that the offender’s name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and permanently prohibited from working with children.

Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Gabathata Makgari, publicly welcomed the conviction and sentence. Major General Makgari commended Detective Warrant Officer Dastile for his dedicated investigative efforts in securing justice for the victim and upholding the integrity of the legal process.
