GROBLERSBRUG – A 45-year-old Zimbabwean national has been remanded in custody after being charged with smuggling approximately R3.8 million worth of manufactured tobacco through the Groblersbrug Port of Entry. The suspect, identified as Shumba Munetsi, appeared at the Phalala Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 26 August 2026, following his arrest by the South African Police Service (SAPS) Border Policing team.
The interception occurred on Monday, 24 August 2026, at approximately 18:42. SAPS members conducting routine border duties stopped a Volvo truck towing an LP gas trailer at the arrival gate. Although the driver initially declared the trailer was transporting gas, officers grew suspicious during the preliminary inspection and referred the vehicle for a more thorough search.
The comprehensive search revealed a large concealed hatch underneath the trailer. When questioned about the hidden compartment, the driver allegedly admitted that the trailer was not carrying gas, but was instead being used to conceal and transport tobacco products. Upon opening the hatch, police discovered 521 plastic bags containing roughly 7,294 kilograms of suspected manufactured tobacco.
The suspected illicit tobacco carries an estimated value of R3.8 million. In addition to the contraband, authorities seized the Volvo truck and the LP gas trailer, which have a combined estimated value of R1.8 million. Munetsi appeared before the Phalala Magistrate’s Court, where the matter was officially postponed to Monday, 31 August 2026, for a formal bail application. He remains in police custody.
Investigations are actively ongoing to determine the origin and intended destination of the illicit tobacco. Authorities are also working to identify whether other individuals or syndicates are linked to this alleged smuggling operation.
Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, commended the vigilance and dedication of the SAPS Border Policing members in detecting the concealed shipment. Lieutenant General Scheepers reiterated that the SAPS will continue to intensify operations at ports of entry and other strategic locations to disrupt the smuggling of illicit goods and safeguard the national economy from organized criminal activities.
