GRAVELOTE — A significant Gravelotte dagga seizure has led to the arrest of two suspects and the confiscation of an estimated R1.2 million worth of the illicit substance in the Mopani District.
The two suspects, a 32-year-old and a 41-year-old, are scheduled to appear before the Namakgale Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 25 August 2026. They are facing charges relating to dealing in dagga following their apprehension over the weekend.
The breakthrough occurred on Sunday, 23 August 2026, at approximately 10:00, along the R71 road situated between Gravelotte and Phalaborwa.
According to details of the incident, two private security guards were on patrol when they noticed a Toyota Corolla parked off the roadway near a bridge. Assuming the vehicle might have been involved in a traffic collision, the guards approached the scene to offer assistance.
Upon inspecting the vehicle, the guards discovered it was loaded with five bags of dagga. Recognizing the severity of the situation, they immediately alerted the members of the Gravelotte Police Station.
Law enforcement officers swiftly responded to the location. During a more thorough search of the area, police uncovered an additional six bags of the narcotic cleverly concealed underneath the bridge. In total, authorities seized eleven bags of dagga, which carry an estimated street value of R1.2 million.
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, publicly praised the intervention that led to the bust. He commended the security guards for their sharp vigilance and situational awareness, while also highlighting the local police force for their rapid and effective response to the tip-off.
The suspects remain in custody as preparations are made for their court appearance, where they will formally answer to the drug trafficking charges.
