WESTERN CAPE – A prolonged Robertson farm standoff that began on Sunday evening, 16 August 2026, concluded on Monday with the death of a 40-year-old gunman following a heavy gun battle that left a police officer injured and multiple law enforcement vehicles damaged.
According to official police spokespersons, the incident originated when local Robertson police responded to a complaint regarding a man firing at a neighbour’s car at a farm in De Hoop. Upon arrival, responding officers came under fire and immediately requested backup, prompting the deployment of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) to de-escalate the situation.
The TRT also came under fire from the same individual during the operation. This exchange resulted in a shoulder injury to one police official, who was subsequently hospitalised and is currently receiving medical attention.
The operational response was further escalated on Monday afternoon with the deployment of the Special Task Force (STF). A heavy gun battle ensued as the gunman fired upon STF members, sustaining damage to a police armoured Nyala vehicle. During the tactical operation, STF members successfully gained entry to a neighbouring house, rescuing two women who had been inside during the confrontation.
The 40-year-old gunman was shot during the shootout and died at the scene. Police spokespersons confirmed that an inquest docket has been officially opened, and officials from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) were summoned to the scene to oversee the investigation. Law enforcement continues to maintain a strong, visible presence on the farm as further investigations proceed.
Following the neutralization of the threat, authorities secured and seized a significant cache of items from the property. The seized evidence includes an assault rifle, a shotgun, two pistols, magazines, various types of ammunition, flags, and notebooks containing inscriptions.
