630kg Dagga Bust at Oshoek Border Post: Suspect Arrested in R4 Million Mpumalanga Drug Seizure

MPUMALANGA — Authorities at the Oshoek border post have foiled a major drug trafficking operation, seizing 630 kilograms of suspected dagga with an estimated street value of over four million rand. The significant Mpumalanga drug bust occurred early Monday morning when police intercepted a commercial freight truck crossing into South Africa from the Kingdom of Eswatini.

Acting on routine search duties at the port of entry around 01:30 on the arrival side, officers uncovered 49 bags of illicit cannabis concealed within a Volvo horse and trailer. The suspect was immediately arrested at the scene and transported to the Hartebeeskop SAPS for detention.

According to a SAPS Spokesperson, the seized Volvo truck bears Eswatini registration numbers and is reportedly registered to a logistics company based in the neighboring kingdom.

“Police investigations are currently underway to establish the exact origin and intended destination of this massive consignment,” the SAPS Spokesperson stated. Authorities are actively working to trace the supply chain and determine if a broader syndicate or other individuals are linked to this illegal cross-border drug trade.

The accused is expected to appear before the relevant court soon to face formal charges relating to dealing in dagga.

Reaffirming their stance on border security, the SAPS Spokesperson emphasized that law enforcement remains strictly committed to combating the trafficking and distribution of illicit narcotics. Police will continue to intensify searches and tactical operations along major transit routes and international ports of entry to disrupt illegal drug networks.
