NORTHERN CAPE — Law enforcement authorities have made significant progress in a major Van Zylsrus stock theft investigation, successfully apprehending three suspects and recovering an entire flock of 25 stolen sheep following a rapid police response.
The specialized intervention prevented the suspects from offloading and selling the remainder of the stolen livestock, highlighting the ongoing battle against agricultural crimes in the region.
Interception and Swift Police Action
The operation was launched on Friday, 14 August 2026, after the Kuruman Stock Theft and Endangered Species (STES) Unit received actionable intelligence from local Van Zylsrus police. Investigators were informed that the livestock had been taken from a local farm sometime between Thursday evening, 13 August 2026, and Friday morning.
Crucially, details regarding the getaway vehicle—a bakkie pulling a trailer—were shared with the STES Unit. Intelligence indicated the vehicle was actively traveling toward the Kuruman area. Acting on this tip, STES members spotted the matching bakkie and trailer in Kuruman, initiating a pursuit before pulling the vehicle over.
Upon instructing the four male occupants to disembark, officers discovered a single live sheep concealed under nets in the back of the truck. While one suspect was detained immediately at the scene, the other three attempted to flee and evade arrest.
Pursuit to an Olifantshoek Abattoir
The ensuing manhunt and investigation quickly led authorities to an abattoir in Olifantshoek. There, police discovered 24 of the stolen sheep, which had already been slaughtered. In total, the entire flock of 25 sheep—valued at an estimated R38,800—was successfully accounted for and recovered.
Following the initial traffic stop, law enforcement tracked down and arrested the 61-year-old driver of the vehicle, along with a 33-year-old male accomplice. A third suspect, aged 35, was subsequently apprehended in Van Zylsrus.
Police have seized the bakkie and trailer used in the commission of the crime for further forensic investigation. An intensive search is currently underway to trace the fourth suspect who successfully evaded capture during the initial incident. The arrested trio is expected to appear in court soon to face stock theft charges.

Speaking on the successful operation, Brigadier Kenneth Baloyi, the Acting District Commissioner of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, highly commended the members of the Kuruman STES Unit for their swift and effective response.
Brigadier Baloyi emphasized that the policing of stock theft activities remains a top priority within the district. He reaffirmed the department’s commitment to intensifying efforts and deploying specialized resources to ensure that agricultural perpetrators are identified, arrested, and held fully accountable for their actions.
