MBOMBELA, MPUMALANGA — Frustrated by a relentless wave of violent offenses, Pienaar residents are actively protesting a severe local crime crisis and demanding immediate government intervention. The community located just outside Mbombela, Mpumalanga, is calling for intensified policing to combat rampant murder, rape, robbery, and widespread extortion that locals say authorities have failed to curb.
During a recent engagement with the Department of Community Safety, citizens voiced their grievances directly to government officials, including Community Safety MEC Jackie Macie. A primary concern brought to Macie’s attention is the alarming rise in extortion, a crisis that is heavily impacting local business owners and shops operated by foreign nationals.
Compounding the community’s frustration are grave allegations that some local police officers may be actively colluding with criminal elements. Residents argue that despite numerous previous engagements—including high-profile visits and promises from police ministers—there has been virtually no meaningful intervention or visible improvement in their daily safety.
The deputy chairperson of the Pienaar Community Policing Forum, highlighted the critical operational failures currently hampering local law enforcement. According to him, the community is suffering due to a severe shortage of police resources, most notably a lack of police vans. This logistical deficit means that when victims visit the station to report incidents or call for emergency assistance, they face unacceptable delays because officers simply do not have the vehicles required to respond to the scenes.
As violent crimes continue to plague the area, the people of Pienaar are urging the provincial government to move beyond empty promises, root out alleged corruption, and provide the necessary resources to secure their neighborhoods.
