MAHIKENG, North West — The highly anticipated North West cabinet reshuffle has officially been enacted, with Premier Lazarus Mokgosi restructuring the Provincial Executive Council to guide the Seventh Administration into its next strategic phase. Announced in Mahikeng, this marks the province’s first significant executive overhaul since the current administration assumed office in 2024.
Following a comprehensive performance assessment of various government departments, Premier Mokgosi announced several high-profile portfolio swaps aimed at strengthening regional service delivery.
Wessels Morweng has been transitioned from the Community Safety and Transport Management department to lead the Arts, Culture, Sports, and Recreation portfolio. Taking over the community safety and transport reins is Virginia Tlhapi.
In the education sector, Viola Motsumi has been relieved of her duties as Education MEC. She is replaced by Desbo Mohono, the former Speaker of the provincial legislature. During the announcement, the Premier noted that he had consulted with the legislature’s current Speaker, Dr. Su, to finalize the leadership transition and ensure the new education portfolio is effectively managed.
While the ruling ANC in the province has publicly embraced the new executive lineup, opposition parties remain highly critical of the North West cabinet reshuffle, arguing it offers no tangible benefits to residents.
Fanon Moema, the North West EFF Spokesperson, condemned the executive overhaul as a mere political exercise. Moema argued that the changes appear designed to settle internal political scores rather than address the pressing issues of service delivery. The EFF representative pointed out the futility of simply moving MECs between departments without addressing the broader competence issues within the cabinet.
Echoing similar sentiments, North West DA leader Freddy Sonakile questioned the merit behind the reassignments. Sonakile described the leadership changes as a superficial flex of political power by the Premier to assert dominance in the province, rather than a material intervention driven by administrative necessity.
Despite the opposition backlash, the Premier maintains that the primary objective behind these executive changes is to optimize departmental performance and accelerate service delivery across the North West province.
