MPUMALANGA — A major stolen diesel bust in Delmas has led to the arrest of two suspects after law enforcement intercepted a suspicious convoy carrying an estimated 4,500 litres of fuel. The successful night-time operation by local crime units not only disrupted a suspected illegal fuel syndicate but also recovered cargo valued at roughly R126,000.
The incident unfolded at approximately 22:50 on Tuesday while officers from the Nkangala District Anti-Hijacking Team and the Delmas Crime Prevention Unit were conducting routine patrols on the N12 highway near Arbor, heading towards Delmas. Authorities noticed a white truck hauling a tanker that was unusually being escorted by a grey Toyota Fortuner, a tactic that immediately raised red flags for the patrolling members.
When officers attempted to pull the convoy over, both vehicles fled, triggering a pursuit. Backup was swiftly requested to handle the split chase. Members of the Delmas Crime Prevention Unit successfully managed to bring the heavy tanker to a halt, while pursuing officers tracked down and intercepted the escorting Toyota Fortuner shortly thereafter.
Both vehicles were impounded and transported to the local police station to aid in the ongoing investigation. During questioning, the driver of the truck claimed he had legally purchased the fuel. However, his story quickly unraveled when he produced an outdated invoice that featured mismatched financial figures and incorrect litre quantities.
Following the investigation, the two suspects were officially arrested and charged with Possession of Suspected Stolen Property, alongside Reckless and Negligent Driving. They are scheduled to make their first appearance in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court soon.
Addressing the successful operation, a Spokesperson for Mpumalanga SAPS Management highly commended the Nkangala District Anti-Hijacking Team and the Delmas Crime Prevention Unit. The Spokesperson praised the joint task force for their exceptional vigilance and seamless teamwork, noting that such collaborative efforts are vital in intercepting and dismantling criminal syndicates involved in the illegal trade and transportation of fuel across the province.
