LIMPOPO — A targeted Motetema drug bust has landed 37-year-old Eric Matebane behind bars, following a successful evening raid that pulled crystal methamphetamine and heroin off local streets. Matebane made his initial appearance at the Groblersdal District Court on Friday, August 7, 2026, facing charges of drug dealing and possession stemming from the Leeuwfontein operation.
Law enforcement action was triggered by community intelligence pointing to illegal narcotics sales in the area. Acting swiftly on the tip-off, operatives from the Provincial Organised Crime Investigation’s Narcotics Unit executed a disruptive intervention on Thursday, August 6, 2026, just after 18:00. Confirming the details of the sweep, Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba and unit spokesperson Captain Moss Maluleke noted that officers arrived at the targeted residence to find the suspect lingering at the front gate.
After formally identifying themselves, detectives moved to secure the perimeter and conduct a comprehensive search of the property, which included a thorough sweep of the suspect’s private bedroom. It was during this search that authorities uncovered the illicit stash. Officers recovered a white plastic container directly from Matebane’s pocket, which held 20 transparent packets of crystal meth. Further inspection of the room revealed a black plastic bag resting on a bed’s headboard, concealing five additional transparent packets filled with smaller brown packets of heroin.
Authorities estimate the total street value of the confiscated narcotics to be approximately R7,000. Following his Friday court appearance, the presiding magistrate postponed the matter to Tuesday, August 11, 2026. This extension will grant detectives adequate time to finalize ongoing police investigations and build a comprehensive docket. Matebane was not granted release and remains in police custody awaiting his next hearing.
