NORTH WEST — Authorities have taken four individuals into custody following a coordinated Rustenburg and Thabazimbi explosives crackdown that successfully removed dangerous materials from local communities. Acting on precise intelligence regarding an illicit trade network, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Tactical Response Team (TRT) launched a targeted operation on Tuesday afternoon, 4 August 2026.
The initial breakthrough occurred when the TRT intercepted three suspects in the parking lot of the Rustenburg Mall. During the swift intervention, officers confiscated five non-electric detonators, two explosive cartridges, and three mobile phones. These devices have been secured as evidence and are currently being analyzed for their connection to the broader illegal sales network.
Following the initial mall bust, the scope of the probe quickly expanded. Collaborating with Crime Intelligence operatives, the TRT tracked the investigation to Thabazimbi, where they successfully apprehended a fourth suspect. This individual was found holding an additional 29 non-electric detonators, significantly increasing the total cache of hazardous materials removed from circulation.
All four suspects are facing serious charges for the unlawful possession of explosives. Their arrests were made in direct contravention of Section 28 of the Explosives Act, 1956 (Act 26 of 1956). The accused are expected to make their first appearances before their respective Magistrates’ Courts in the coming days as police investigations into the supply chain of the explosives continue.
Brigadier Mamotsamai Ntoagae, the Acting District Commissioner for the Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 2, publicly praised the involved units for their rapid response and high level of professionalism.
According to Ntoagae, the successful confiscation of these illegal explosives highlights the SAPS’ unwavering dedication to fighting serious crimes and proactively ensuring the safety of the public before these materials can be used to cause harm.
