EASTERN CAPE — A brazen Jeffreys Bay jewellery robbery was swiftly thwarted this weekend, resulting in the arrest of four suspects and the recovery of stolen merchandise valued at an estimated R3 million. Thanks to seamless operational synergy and the rapid deployment of local law enforcement, the armed heist ended just hours after the initial breach, with authorities intercepting the fleeing suspects along a major highway.
According to police reports, the incident unfolded on Sunday morning at approximately 10:15. Employees and witnesses were inside the local retail store assisting customers when two armed individuals stormed the premises. Brandishing firearms, the suspects threatened the occupants and ordered everyone to lie on the floor. Moments later, accomplices entered the store, smashed the glass display cabinets, and looted a massive haul of merchandise before fleeing the scene. Fortunately, no shots were fired and no injuries were reported during the ordeal.
The breakthrough hinged on a blend of modern surveillance and rapid tactical response. Investigators immediately reviewed closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage and circulated descriptions of the getaway vehicle across local security networks and the NAVIC tracking system. Acting on this real-time intelligence, members of the Gqeberha Flying Squad spotted a vehicle matching the suspect description travelling at high speeds away from the coastal town and heading toward Gqeberha. Officers successfully intercepted the car along the N2 Highway.
A tactical search of the vehicle led to the arrest of four men, aged between 24 and 36. Inside the car, police recovered a large quantity of the stolen merchandise—still bearing the original retail tags—as well as clothing that perfectly matched the outfits seen on the suspects in the security footage. Officers also confiscated one round of AK-47 ammunition.
Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, highly commended the collaborative efforts that led to the rapid breakthrough. She praised the excellent operational synergy between local security networks, tracking systems, and the Flying Squad that ensured the suspects were apprehended within hours of the initial alarm.
The four suspects remain in police detention and are scheduled to appear in court to face charges of possessing suspected stolen property and the unlawful possession of ammunition.
