KNYSNA, Western Cape – A long-standing Knysna family has approached the courts alleging harassment and intimidation by a local municipal housing official, claiming political motivations behind a sudden demolition order targeting their home.
Nomabhongo Mani, representing her family, states they have occupied their plot in the Kayalethu settlement for decades and hold a valid title deed to the land. Last year, a government-subsidized RDP house was constructed on their property, with municipal officials reportedly confirming that the family’s existing bungalow could remain standing.
However, the situation shifted when a new directive arrived ordering the demolition of the original structure. Mani identifies the official driving the demolition demand as Pia, a municipal employee formerly with the housing department. The family alleges the action stems from opposing political views.
“She said, ‘Listen, I don’t have much to talk to you. What I’m saying to you, demolish this house,’” Mani recounted, describing a conversation with the official. “I asked her: previously you said if you demolish there will be difficulties—why now?”
According to the family, significant personal funds have been invested in renovating the existing bungalow to accommodate extended family members. The matriarch, who arrived on the land with her father in 1990, describes the ongoing threat as deeply distressing.
“This is painful and affecting my health because we don’t have another place,” she said. “It’s this person that is making our lives difficult. She sent people numerous times to come demolish the house.”
In response to the escalating tensions, the Mani family has secured a restraining order against the official. Court records indicate the official has already faced harassment charges related to the matter, which she is contesting, with a further court appearance scheduled for July.
When approached for comment, the Knysna Municipality declined to respond, citing that the matter is currently sub judice and before the courts.
The family maintains that, despite the construction of the new RDP unit on their property, the threat to demolish their renovated home remains active. They have affirmed their intention to continue legal proceedings to protect their residence and uphold their property rights.
