A joint intelligence-led law enforcement operation conducted on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, resulted in the seizure of illicit cigarettes valued at R23,000 and the arrest of one suspect in the Thaba Nchu Central Business District (CBD).
The operation was executed by a multi-disciplinary team comprising the Mangaung Metro District Operational Command Centre (DOCC) Task Team, the Mangaung District Operational Centre (MDOC), and Ladybrand Customs enforcement officials. The action forms part of ongoing efforts to combat economic sabotage linked to the trade in counterfeit and contraband goods.
Acting on tactical intelligence, authorities targeted a local wholesale business in the Thaba Nchu CBD suspected of distributing illicit goods. The establishment is owned by a foreign national male. During a thorough search of the premises, law enforcement officials confiscated six (6) master cases containing various illicit cigarette brands, alongside a significant quantity of rolling papers. The total estimated street value of the seized contraband is R23,000.
A 39-year-old male suspect was arrested at the scene. He faces charges relating to the possession of illicit cigarettes and non-compliance with the Customs and Excise Act.
The suspect is expected to make his first appearance in the Thaba Nchu Magistrate’s Court shortly. Authorities have not released further details pending court proceedings.
