Ongoing discussions between residents of Khunotswana Village in Lehurutshe and the North West Provincial Government center on plans to relocate families impacted by recurrent flooding. The settlement, situated on land officially classified as a wetland, experiences severe inundation each rainy season, with many homes remaining water-logged since last year’s floods. Recent heavy rains have caused further damage to the community.
While government representatives emphasize that relocation is essential for resident safety, perspectives within the village remain divided. Several households have expressed reluctance to move, stating that the properties they currently occupy are larger and of better quality than the alternative housing structures proposed by authorities. Conversely, other residents have indicated they are willing and eager to accept relocation offers.
One community member voiced concern that the government’s approach lacks clarity and urgency, appealing for accelerated intervention to prevent further postponement of a lasting solution.
In response to the evolving situation, a spokesperson for the North West Disaster Management Center confirmed that a multi-stakeholder meeting is scheduled for this Friday. The Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality will participate in discussions focused on securing habitable land for displaced families and outlining the role of social facilitation to support affected households throughout the relocation process.
