A 76-year-old man has been arrested following a shooting incident on the morning of 24 May 2026 in Bantini Location, Ngqeleni, which left one person dead and two others injured.
According to police reports, shortly before 10:30, community members were collecting firewood in the forest when they were confronted and shot by a male suspect.
Upon arrival at the scene, South African Police Service (SAPS) officers found an injured person lying near a vehicle used to transport firewood, suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach. A second victim had already been taken to a hospital by community members.
During a further search of the area, police discovered the body of a man, approximately 22 years old and a resident of Bantini Location, who had sustained a single gunshot wound to the forehead. He was declared dead at the scene.
The suspect, a 76-year-old male, was found still in possession of a shotgun and a pistol and was immediately arrested. Both firearms, which are lawfully licensed in the suspect’s name, have been confiscated for further investigation.
The two injured victims, also residents of Bantini Location, are receiving medical attention.
The investigation is ongoing. The suspect is expected to appear in the Ngqeleni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 26 May 2026.
