A planned armed robbery targeting a business in the Botshabelo Industrial Area was thwarted by vigilant police work on Tuesday, resulting in the arrest of five suspects.
The operation was conducted by the Crime Combating Task Team (CCTT) of the Free State, deployed in the Eastern Mangaung Metro stations. Authorities acted on specific intelligence indicating that a criminal group was plotting to rob businesses on dates when employee bonuses were scheduled to be paid.
While en route to the Industrial Area, police identified a red Fiat Punto believed to be used by the suspects. The vehicle was tactically pulled over near the Botshabelo Traffic Department.
A search of the vehicle and its five male occupants yielded a significant arsenal of weapons and robbery implements. Police recovered three firearms with filed-off serial numbers, two butcher knives, a chisel, pliers, four balaclavas, industrial gloves, and surgical masks.

The suspects, aged between 29 and 38, were immediately placed under arrest for possession of unlicensed firearms and housebreaking implements.
Following their arrest, investigators successfully linked the same five individuals to a prior house robbery in E-Section, Botshabelo. In that incident, the perpetrators robbed victims of their cellphones, a laptop, and car keys.
The five accused are currently in police custody and are expected to make their first appearance before the Botshabelo Magistrate’s Court in the coming days to face the charges.
