A targeted operation by the South African Police Service’s Anti-Gang Unit on Monday led to the seizure of an illegal firearm and ammunition, along with the arrest of two suspects, one of whom was wanted for murder.
According to police reports, the operation commenced after members of the #AntiGangUnit acted on received intelligence. The information was operationalised, leading them to a premises on Orchid Street in Hanover Park.
Upon searching the property, the team discovered a 9mm pistol and a large quantity of ammunition of different calibres inside a safe located in a bedroom.
A 57-year-old man was immediately arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and the illegal possession of ammunition.
In a follow-up operation based on further information, the team proceeded to Halmans Walk in the same suburb. There, they located and apprehended a 33-year-old male who was wanted in connection with a murder case. The murder was reported at the Philippi SAPS in November 2025.
Both suspects are expected to be formally charged and will make their initial appearances in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court.
