A sustained police operation on entry routes to the province yielded a significant drug bust this week, leading to the confiscation of 554 bundles of Khat and the arrest of two bus drivers.
The successful interception occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, 12 November 2025, as part of the ongoing Safer Festive Season operations. At approximately 04:30, Laingsburg police members were conducting a vehicle checkpoint at the entrance to the town when they pulled over a passenger bus for inspection.
Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered three suspicious boxes concealed near the chassis. The vigilant members opened the containers and found them stashed with a large quantity of Khat, a plant-based stimulant.
The illicit drugs were immediately confiscated. Police subsequently arrested both drivers of the bus.
The suspects, aged 46 and 51, are each facing a charge of dealing in drugs. They are expected to appear in the Laingsburg Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.
