KwaZulu-Natal Officials Condemn Illegal Sale of RDP Houses to Undocumented Immigrants

Provincial authorities have issued a stern warning to residents illegally selling their government-subsidized RDP houses to undocumented immigrants, labeling the practice as a criminal activity that will face consequences.

The KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements Department reported being inundated with complaints from concerned citizens, particularly in areas like Montclair, Durban, where former Transnet employee housing is allegedly being sublet to undocumented migrants.

Residents Speak Out

Balisa, a local resident and former Transnet employee, revealed that many original tenants had purchased properties elsewhere but instead of returning their state-subsidized homes, they illegally rented them out.

“We have waited for so long for these houses to be sold to us as Transnet employees. Now, seeing them occupied by undocumented foreigners is unfair,” Balisa said. She explained that bureaucratic delays, including municipal subdivision requirements, had stalled ownership transfers, exacerbating the problem.

Government Response

The provincial Human Settlements Department confirmed it had escalated the matter to Transport Minister Barbara Creecy, as Transnet falls under her portfolio. Engagements are underway to address the issue, including potential interventions similar to the recent resolution of the Montclair Lodge housing dispute.

Officials reiterated that selling or subletting RDP houses violates housing policies, and perpetrators will face legal action. Residents are urged to report such activities as authorities work to reclaim unlawfully occupied properties.
