Residents of Khutsong Hostel in Carletonville are voicing their frustration over poor living conditions, accusing the Merafong City Municipality of failing to deliver on its promises.
For years, the community has endured severe service delivery issues, including unreliable water and electricity supply, crumbling infrastructure, and unsanitary living conditions. Many claim that despite repeated assurances from local officials—particularly during election campaigns—no meaningful improvements have been made.
A Hostel in Decay
Journalists visiting the area documented shocking conditions:
-
Exposed sewage flowing near homes, worsening during rainy seasons and emitting a foul stench.
-
Dangerous electrical cables strewn across the ground, posing risks to children playing nearby.
-
Dilapidated buildings with broken windows, some patched with cardboard to keep out the winter cold.
-
Collapsing structures, forcing some residents to abandon their homes.
Community leaders say they feel “defeated” after numerous failed engagements with the municipality. “We have raised these issues many times, but nothing changes,” one leader said.
Failed Relocation Promises
Residents were allegedly promised relocation to the Extension 23 area, with reports suggesting that over R80 million was allocated for the project. However, the move has yet to happen, with the municipality citing a lack of funds for bulk infrastructure.
The Merafong City Municipality is expected to respond to these allegations, while Human Settlements officials may also be questioned over the alleged mismanagement of relocation funds.
A Community Losing Hope
With winter setting in, residents say they are desperate for intervention. “We just want to live like normal human beings,” one resident pleaded.
As the situation worsens, the people of Khutsong Hostel are left wondering if their cries will ever be heard.
