Taxi Strike Halts Operations at Lebowakgomo Rank Amid Route Dispute

Commuters in Lebowakgomo were left stranded on Friday as operations at the town’s main taxi rank came to a standstill following a strike by the Lebowakgomo Taxi Association. The association is embroiled in an ongoing dispute with the Zebediela Taxi Association over contested local routes.

Commuters Bear the Brunt

A reporter confirmed that no taxis were operating, leaving hundreds of commuters—including learners and workers—without transport.

“This is one of the main taxi ranks in town, and a lot of people rely on it,” Malule said. “The strike has severely impacted commuters and local businesses.”

Allegations and Counterclaims

A member of the Zebediela Taxi Association alleged that some operators from the Lebowakgomo association were using routes without proper permits.

“There are taxi operators from the Lebowakgomo association operating on incorrect routes—routes they do not have permission for,” he claimed.

However, a spokesperson of the Lebowakgomo Taxi Association refuted the allegations, stating that their permits legally allow them to operate on the disputed routes.

“The problem stems from the permits issued by the department, which show that we share these routes,” he said. “This is why we are facing these issues.”

Previous Clashes and Ongoing Tensions

This is not the first time the two associations have clashed over routes. Past disputes have reportedly led to threats against commuters and operators, raising concerns over safety and transport stability in the region.

Authorities Urged to Intervene

With no immediate resolution in sight, commuters are calling for urgent intervention from transport authorities to prevent further disruptions.
